Teaching guide / Online classes

A calmer routine for your next online French class.

A working meeting link is only one part of an online lesson. Use this before, during and after checklist to connect the technical setup with the learning students came for.

Before class: make the essentials easy to find.

  1. Confirm the schedule and timezone

Check the date, start time, end time and batch timezone in Frenchify. For a new group, ask learners to confirm how the time appears to them, especially across daylight-saving changes.

  2. Verify the actual meeting link

If Google is connected, wait for the lesson’s meeting status to be ready. Open the saved link with the teaching account and confirm that it reaches the intended room.

  3. Publish the starting material

Give students a short instruction such as “Open the weekend phrase sheet before joining.” Keep the file or link with the batch materials so the same resource is available afterward.

  4. Prepare a fallback message

Decide how you will communicate if the meeting fails. Have a brief independent task ready so a technical interruption does not leave learners without a next step.

At the start: establish participation.

Allow a short check of audio, names and the resource students need. State the learning goal in simple terms: “By the end, you will describe three weekend activities and ask one follow-up question.” Explain how students should signal that they need help.

Use a predictable opening question that everyone can answer with familiar language. It gives you an early sense of participation and audio quality before you introduce the more demanding task. Keep the technical check brief and return to the French as soon as the group is ready.

During class: make listening active.

Give listeners a purpose while someone speaks: note the three activities, identify one time expression or prepare a follow-up question. That keeps the speaking task connected to comprehension instead of turning it into a sequence of isolated performances.

For larger groups, use a participation structure supported by your meeting account and teaching setup. Google Meet features and controls can vary by account or organization; plan around the tools you have verified rather than assuming a particular feature is available.

Collect a small amount of evidence for the learning goal. A short repeated task after feedback can show more than a long uninterrupted presentation. Keep private student information out of screen sharing and close unrelated windows before presenting.

After class: leave a usable record.

  • Record attendance in Frenchify using present, absent, late or excused as appropriate.
  • Write a recap with the key activity, the expressions to revisit and the location of the material.
  • Mark the course topics actually covered, while keeping individual mastery separate from class coverage.
  • Set a homework follow-up with a clear deadline and submission format.
  • At the next lesson, return briefly to the previous feedback so students can see how the sessions connect.

When something goes wrong.

Situation Practical response
The Meet link is missing or pending. Check meeting status before class. Resolve the Google connection and retry creation; contact your administrator if processing remains stuck.
The connected account is wrong. Reconnect the Google account you use for teaching and verify the next lesson’s event and link.
A learner cannot enter the meeting. Check the correct link, account and Google meeting-access controls. Classroom enrollment does not override Google’s admission rules.
A class has moved. Reschedule it in Frenchify, verify the connected event update and tell learners to use the current schedule.
You edited an event directly in Google. Check the Frenchify lesson separately. This integration does not import those edits back into the classroom.
A little structure. More room to teach.
